Cailee Rae has accomplished something most young people can only dream of. What started as a practical way to hone her skills, became an unstoppable train — headed straight for stardom. Instagram posts, that were thought to be a way to showcase her talents and practice her craft, quickly found widespread recognition. To date, Cailee Rae has over 500,000 Instagram followers, a quickly growing YouTube channel, and a debut album coming the near future. The sky is literally the limit for Cailee Rae, and if you listen to her music you might urge her to watch her head, because she’s beginning to approach the clouds.
Your career started with, from what we’ve been told, a “casual Instagram post.” When did you realize things were becoming a little more than “casual”?
I think I noticed, just from watching all the numbers and watching my “Caibae” family really develop. It took awhile for me to really look at my numbers and realize that many people were watching me, because for a long time it was hard to believe. I mean to this day I still pinch myself. I’m so grateful.
In the beginning, was there ever a thought in your mind you could actually be “discovered” from the videos you were posting?
In all honesty, I posted the videos for my own well being. The videos really help me work on my craft, practice letting go and restricting my voice, and putting my own take on popular songs. I honestly just have fun and like being myself. I was always so scared about what people thought of me and my voice. I always want everything PERFECT, and that taught me a lot of self-confidence and taught me “just do you”. It was just a bonus that other people really enjoyed them and spread them around.
How would you describe your music to potential listeners? What can they expect?
I would describe my music as pop with a few genres mixed in. My goal for my music is for others to listen to it and CONNECT. It’s so important for me to record songs that mean something. I want people to listen to them and completely relate in any way they can. Music is such a powerful, magical thing and it’s a language anyone can understand. It’s helped me get through a lot and inspired me in so many ways. I want to change the world through it.
We read you involve yourself in every aspect in the process of creating music and are a talented musician. What can you tell us about your musical background?
YouTube was my best friend growing up. I learned all the instruments I know just from watching basic tutorials. I also learned from watching others. I’m a very visual learner, so when I sit in the studio and watch the engineer produce and mix, it taught me as well. It’s all so interesting to me, so I love learning as much as I can. There is always something to learn and always room for improvement!
If you were to pick one of your songs as “the” song to showcase you as a singer, which would it be?
I honestly don’t think I could pick just one. Especially with my new stuff coming out, each one is different and all showcase a different part of me. I’m constantly evolving and growing!
Since you’ve built a lot of your career to date on cover songs, you obviously have a respect for other artists. Who are you most inspired by?
I’m inspired by a lot of different artists for different reasons. My main favorites are Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Twenty One Pilots. Ed Sheeran is an AMAZING lyricist and I can always connect to his lyrics. Sam Smith has the voice of an angel that makes you feel everything. Taylor Swift is a confident, powerful business woman, and Twenty One Pilots takes unique to another level.
You’ve released a handful of singles and numerous cover songs at this point. When should readers be expecting a full-length album?
Soon. Very very soon. I’m so excited to share my new content coming up. Me and a few close hard-working people have put a lot of time and effort into the music. I really put my ideas and concepts to use and I’m so proud. I’m in love with all of it and I hope everyone falls in love too.
Can you give us some ideas as to what we should expect from your first album?
This album is a variety of fun energy, and really meaningful lyrics that I hope people can connect with and be inspired by!
