When it comes to people who “do it all,” Valery Ortiz might be one of the most impressive. She’s known as the host of American Latino TV, a star of VH1’s Hit the Floor, and a rising talent in all respects. On top of her more visible talents, Ortiz explained she’s also interested in writing children’s books and she’s actively involved in charitable endeavors. She has a charming personality and we adoringly see her as a Swiss Army Knife of talents. What might have been easier is to come up with the list of things she can’t do.
Ortiz gave us details about what she’s working on currently, where you can find her, and tips on making it in the industry. She’s a perfect example of hard work and a willingness to learn paying off in a big way!
You’ve proven you’re a multi-talented star (acting, hosting, dancing, etc.), you’re somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife in that regard. What do you get the most enjoyment out of doing?
Haha. Love the Swiss Army Knife comparison! Hmm. They are all so different but if I had to only choose one to do for the rest of my life, I would choose my acting ‘blade’. 😉
In terms of acting, do you look for roles to showcase all of your talents or roles highlighting your acting ability?
If I can get that picky, I would choose roles that showcase and highlight both! It is so rare to get that kind of opportunity but it is possible!
You’ve got a lot going on right now with Hit the Floor. What can viewers expect by tuning in?
Actually, this season of Hit the Floor specifically allowed me to “play” the most. I can not wait until the fans tune in! They can expect a lot of surprises, edge of your seat drama and as expected, the Devil Girls always deliver something sexy! Season three also showcases a lot of heart. Our fans will get a more personal insight to all of the characters and their ‘why’. I know it has been a long wait, but it will be well worth it!
As a host, you are the face of American Latino TV. Who are some the most interesting people you’ve talked to and what are some of the things you’ve been able to learn from them?
What is exciting and beautiful about American Latino are all of our different stories/guests. There is something interesting and inspiring about each of them. Thanks to AL I learned extreme kayaking exists (Rafa Ortiz/no relation) or street league skating! I am most intrigued about the stories or people I knew nothing about!
Did you give extreme kayaking a try?
Extreme?! Eh, have you seen that footage? Ha! Ha! I am not too sure about that! Regular, calm, kayaking? Sign me up! Well, funny story! My brother and I did tandem kayaking in Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. I got in first and held the Go Pro. As he was getting in, he lost his balance. He regained it in time to get back on the boat BUT made the kayak and I tip over! Everyone cracked up. Ha! Ha! That is as ‘extreme’ as I have gotten in a kayak!
We were informed you’re working on a series of children’s books. Where did this interest come from? Can you tell us what they’re about?
Yes! I have always loved to write. My mom luckily had saved all my poems/short stories since I was a little girl. I feel I can communicate my thoughts and feelings best on paper. The ‘Hola! Hello!’ Series was born a day I was feeling insecure. It is a bilingual children’s story that teaches the reader words in Spanish. My dream would be to hold this series in my hands and turn the pages but we are living in a digital world so I am considering making it a digital book/app as well. If you are reading this and are app savvy, holla at your girl! Ha ha.
What else do you have going on (or in the works) presently? Where should our readers be looking for you?
I will be working on a couple of web-series’ and a friends short film come January. I am so excited about all of the new doors opening in 2016! Follow me on Instagram/Twitter @Valstweet for any new updates!
Do you think having numerous talents has helped advance your career? Would you recommend young actors become a well-rounded as you are to increase their chances of success?
Absolutely! I would recommend that for anyone in any career! The more you know, the more you can offer! Life experience and knowledge will enrich your life no matter what and if it brings you happiness, I would say you have succeeded!
