Film Title: WHEN KIDS GROW UP
WHEN KIDS GROW UP is a short action drama exploring the harsh pathology of violence. With her car broken down on the side of the road, soft-spoken Mackenzie takes refuge in a bar nearby. Approached by a group of men offering help, pleasantries quickly escalate to savage aggression. Much to their surprise, Mackenzie soon reveals her brutal intent.

Why did you decide to submit to FirstGlance?
Over the past few years, we have admired FirstGlance Festival from afar as a leader in the indie film festival circuit. The Festival’s ability to curate thought-provoking and innovative films, while simultaneously being one of the fastest growing film festivals in the city, is inspiring. As a young production company, UP greatly appreciates the Festival’s year round focus on supporting indie and independent filmmaking. UP Productionz is honored to have WHEN KIDS GROW UP screened as part of FirstGlance LA’s 2017 Festival.
Will someone from your team be attending FirstGlance?
Yes, Marissa Labog, founder of UP Productionz, who also wrote and starred in the film will be at the festival. Additionally, UP’s Executive Producer Emily Wanserski will be attending.
What is something you feel is important for our readers to know about your film?
People’s relationship with violence is multi-dimensional. Stemming from past experiences, partners, and memories, to daily life and current events, individuals’ understanding of the effects of violence is the primary subject matter of this series. Each character in WHEN KIDS GROW UP not only has a distorted view of physical force and pain, but also a warped emotional connection to the act. Based on my experiences playing forceful, violent characters, I have learned that everyone has a breaking point, and we have yet to truly understand what bring us to that moment. WHEN KIDS GROW UP explores one female’s interaction with her breaking point.
What should viewers expect from your film?
Viewers should expect suspense, intrigue, and contradicting emotions. Although the work stands on its own in this festival, WHEN KIDS GROW UP is the first of a series, which will be released over the next two years.
Do you have any production stories our readers might enjoy?
Shahaub and I cast our friends! Since the group knew each other well and had worked together countless times, we announced that everyone had the freedom to stay in character between takes. This helped make the more intense scenes enjoyable – and perhaps believable? – because we weren’t afraid of offending anyone with off-putting remarks or profanity, which allowed us to play within the violence.
What are you looking forward to most at FirstGlance?
We are looking forward to meeting filmmakers and seeing the other work at the festival.
